Description

Tina Comida lost 300 pounds when she died. Then she met Jason, the man of her dreams. Fortunately, he was a ghost, too. Jack got hit by a car while he was skateboarding. Ketchum was eaten by a mountain lion. Family ties run deep, even to the earth, sea and sky. When Tina, Jack and all the ghosts at the Gold Rush Cemetery decide to help fix the mess the earth is in, the sea is the limit! Being a ghost means you can look as thin as you want…or like a werewolf, vampire or Elvis! Since ghosts don’t have to work or do many of the other things that living folks are roped into, they have plenty of time for adventure, romance and all that other good stuff. Bone Soup's lively cast of dead California folks are determined to live the afterlife to the fullest. And they won't die trying!
Most people think of death as an end, but for ghosts it’s just the beginning. Many things carry over from “regular” life: There are places to go and people to meet. But now that you don’t have a body to drag around, you don’t need food, clothing or shelter — and money is worthless. You don’t have to work, so your schedule is open for travel, adventure and romance.
Of course, there’s a down side to everything. With all that extra time on their hands, some ghosts are overwhelmed. They can’t blame lack of money, a crappy boss, an irritable spouse or demanding kids for their personal problems. All that free will and a limited supply of excuses make some of them run away and find a place to hide out and haunt quietly.
Tina Comida is a romantic, overweight 40-something San Francisco chef and food writer who dies of a heart attack just as her first cookbook is published.
Jack is a 15-year-old skateboarder struck down by a car as he shreds the sidewalks of Sacramento.
They’re not all angels out there, though, and the new ghosts are introduced to the mores of the afterlife by Bernie, a.k.a. Bernard Thoreau, a cantankerous coot who died shortly after the California gold rush.
Tina finds herself falling in love with a contemporary of Bernie’s: Jason Goldsmith, a Sacramento shopkeeper who missed out on being a part of the “Big 5” railroad tycoons because he left the poker game early to be back to his mother’s home by midnight.
Jack’s Uncle Frank, a nuclear physicist and veteran surfer who has discovered a lost continent in the Pacific, tempers Jack’s youthful enthusiasm. A massive earthquake killed the aquatic population of Pacifica. Their blue ghosts now swim the ocean singing soulful songs for dying fish trapped by leftover nets and longline hooks jettisoned by rogue trawlers. Jack is outraged by the useless carnage and when he and his uncle return to the cemetery in Sacramento for Memorial Day, his rants start to enlist some unlikely allies:
Oscar (the Octopus), who suffered from polio and who was killed when his wheelchair was hit by a car;
Tina and Jason, who are falling in love, despite the century between them (dead is dead!);
A reluctant Bernie, who has always been more of a hermit than a mixer;
Ketchum, the mysterious 1000-year-old Indian who taps into universal energy while chanting atop the peaks of the Sierras.
Bernie is surprised to learn that Ketchum is able to talk to the Twinkles, energetic mini-spirits who flit through the universe like playful Fourth of July sparklers. Jack’s plan is to use the focused energy of the Twinkles to thwart the fish-finding electronics of rogue trawlers poaching in Alaskan waters. As the hardy group of ghosts faces this challenge under the drama of the Northern Lights, they are pushed to individual extremes by a cold storm that forges new links of courage and unity.
